Description

Educational classes, activities, support groups and hotlines related to smoking, diet/nutrition, exercise and weight management are included in the database. A variety of programs for each topic are included. You can search the database by location, by topic or you may just browse the list of available programs. Clicking on a title of the program will take you to a full-page description, use the back button to return to the list.

 

Inclusion Criteria

A community program must meet the following criteria to be included in the ARCH database.

 

1. Program must serve residents of Cuyahoga County . Government, not-for-profit and hospital programs will be represented. For-profit/commercial programs are represented under some conditions (see point 6).

 

2. Program must provide counseling or educational services that address at least one of the 4 target health promotion topics: exercise/physical activity; diet/nutrition, weight management; or smoking prevention or cessation.

 

3. Programs that provide counseling by a single individual, for example behavioral therapy or hypnosis for aiding in smoking cessation or weight loss or a for-profit home health provider will be excluded. Individual practitioners or groups of consulting practitioners will be excluded.

 

4. Nursing homes, assisted living or other long-term care provider program/ services will be excluded.

 

5. A service will be excluded if it is a newsletter, speaker's bureau of other service used only to promote the organization and its services; a devotional service; or a volunteer recruitment effort of the agency.

 

6. A for-profit/commercial program may be included if it meets the criteria above and a) provides services that are not available from other non-commercial resources, b) is based on sound health promotion theory, and c) participants are not required to buy products (e.g. special foods, supplements, equipment) to partake in the program.

 

Definitions

Title
The descriptive title of the program.
City
The location of the program. Some programs are available in multiple locations.
Fee
Many programs have a fee. Fees are described in more detail on the full description page. In many instances, you will need to call for specific details.
Offered For
Some programs are offered for specific groups, such as seniors, etc.
Bilinugal staff
If a program has bilingual staff available, this has been indicated.

Tip of the Week

Weight Management

Keep the 'healthy' snacks (fruit, carrot sticks) up front in the refrigerator and high-calorie foods (cake, pie, high-calorie dips) in the back. Better yet- don't keep many high-calorie foods around at all!
